How to Inventory Barns
Barns in Wisconsin are “an endangered species,” the causes readily listed; decay, abundant size, snow load, economic displacement. Yet nothing symbolizes our historic connection to the land with the same authority, bravery and family bond as a barn.
The Barn Project
The goal of this project is to inventory and photograph every barn in Wisconsin; every county, every barn. This project cannot save barns but it can create a permanent record of barns whose numbers change daily. The estimate is between 25% and 50% of the barns original to Wisconsin now remain. Because of continuing stress, landscape alterations and cultural shifts, barn numbers will continue to decline. It is predictable that another generation will see a major reduction in barn numbers. The immediate objective of this project is modest as it is achievable, not to save barns but to save their image.
