The Portage Co. MGA meets monthly, January thru October, with a holiday party thrown in for fun in December. Our meetings include business as well as an educational component. This year, topics included Trees and Shrubs for the Northern Landscape, Preparing for the Spring Season, Growing Cultivated Mushrooms and Photography in the Garden. In the summer months, our meetings take place in members gardens, with a tour and information on how the landscape eveloped and plants and hardscapes used (successfully or not).

The Master Gardener Program

The goal of the Master Gardener Program is to train enthusiastic volunteers so they can, in turn, provide research-based information on a wide variety of horticultural topics to the general public in their communities.  Master Gardener Training is held every three years, depending on the county. You are given 36 hours of instruction in a variety of horticultural subjects, and then asked to pay back those hours as a volunteer in the community during the following year. While you are doing so, you are considered an Intern Master Gardener. There is a wide variety of opportunities to get your hours in, plus many additional opportunities for continued education.
